Use a tape measure from the house to the outer edge (width) and along the house (length). Round to the nearest foot.
Note trees, slopes, utility lines, and door locations. These affect the final cost and design.
Sandy soil (common on the Coast) may need deeper footings. Clay soil needs different drainage. Both affect foundation costs.
A few things to think about before you start digging.
Most Gulf Coast cities require a permit for decks over 30" high or attached to the house. Check with your local building department — fines for unpermitted work can double the cost.
Dial 811 at least 3 days before digging post holes. They'll mark gas, electric, and water lines for free. Hitting a line can cost thousands — and it's your responsibility to check.
Salt air eats standard fasteners. Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized screws, joist hangers, and post brackets. Regular steel will rust in 2-3 years on the Coast.
Deck boards need a 1/8" gap for water to drain. In coastal areas with heavy rain, consider a slight slope (1/4" per 10ft) away from the house. Standing water causes rot fast.
Your deck is only as good as its foundation. Sandy soil needs 24"+ deep footings below the frost line. On the Coast, that means digging deeper than you think — 12" diameter minimum.
Joist spans over 12' need engineering or larger lumber (2x8 instead of 2x6). If your deck is wider than 12', plan for a beam in the middle or step up to 2x10 joists.
